3 Days in Kuala Lumpur

Cairo is not just a gateway to Egypt, it's a whirlwind of ancient wonders, buzzing bazaars, and world-class museums. With just 3 days, you can stand beneath the pyramids, trace the birth of civilization in Memphis, sail the Nile, and even peek into Luxor's royal tombs. This itinerary combines iconic highlights, insider tips, hotel and dining suggestions, and a bonus look at Nile cruises for those tempted to explore further.

Day 1 – Giza's Ancient Wonders & the Grand Egyptian Museum

🌄 Morning: The Great Pyramids of Giza. Start your Egyptian adventure with the timeless Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the desert heat. Camel rides are photogenic but rife with scams, always negotiate upfront and agree on the ride duration. And there's also the issue of are these camels OK taking riders around for hours in the intense sun. Some vendors also have horses. You decide what's right for you! Entry Fees: $10–15 for complex access; additional for entering individual pyramids. Private Guide: ~$120 for full-day tour with Egyptologist and transport.

🏛 Afternoon: The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Just 2 km from the pyramids, the soon-to-open GEM promises to be the world's largest archaeological museum. Even now, partially open, it showcases: A 32-ton Ramses II statue, Interactive restoration labs and the entire Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time. Entry Fees: Expected ~$20–30 when fully open. This is a marked improvement from my visit in 2006 when the museum was in downtown Cairo in the middle of a traffic circle! There was only AC in Tut exhibit and pollution pouring in through the windows. Sarcophaguses were piled on each other with computer printed "X dynasty" signs on them. I need to go back now that it's all more civilized.

🌅 Evening – Nile Views & Egyptian Cuisine

Unwind with a Nile dinner cruise or rooftop dining in Zamalek, watching Cairo glow at sunset. Where to Eat: 9 Pyramids Lounge: Rooftop views and grilled platters (~$15 pp). or the famous Koshary Abou Tarek: Cairo's legendary street food (koshary from ~$3).

Day 2 – Saqqara, Memphis & Flight to Luxor

🌄 Morning: Saqqara Necropolis. Explore Egypt's earliest stone pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, and underground tombs with colorful hieroglyphics. Entry Fees: ~$10–15. Private Tour: ~$100 with driver-guide, includes transport from Cairo.

🏺 Midday – Memphis Open-Air Museum. Just 30 minutes from Saqqara, visit: Colossus of Ramses II, Alabaster Sphinx, Temple of Ptah ruins, Granite sarcophagi and stelae. Entry Fee: $2–3, visit lasts 30–45 minutes. Traditional Egyptian fare en route: ful, falafel, or grilled meats ($10–15 pp).

✈️ Evening – Transfer to Luxor Domestic flight (~$80–120, 1 hour) saves 7–8 hours compared to train/car. Overnight at Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor (luxury) or West Bank guesthouses (budget ~$50–70).

Day 3 – Luxor: Royal Tombs, Temples & Sunset Felucca

🏞️ Morning – West Bank. Valley of the Kings: Explore royal tombs (Tutankhamun's entry extra). Not for the claustrophobic. The stairways are narrow and hot. No photos inside any of the tombs, yes, there's someone there to scold you! Temple of Hatshepsut: Stunning cliffside temple dedicated to Egypt's female pharaoh. There's still some very well-preserved frescoes, just make sure to look UP. Colossi of Memnon: Giant statues guarding ancient Thebes. Guided Tour: ~$60–100 pp including transfers.

🏛 Afternoon – Karnak & Luxor Temple. Stroll through the Karnak Temple Complex—massive columns, obelisks, and sacred lakes. Optionally visit Luxor Temple if time allows.

🌅 Evening – Felucca Ride on the Nile

Skip the pricey and often underwhelming light-and-sound shows; instead, glide along the Nile in a traditional sailboat as the sun sets over Luxor. (~$35 pp).

This for those that have a very limited amount of time. If you have a full week I would recommend a cruise on the Nile.

🛍️ Khan el-Khalili Bazaar

Before or after your main tour, wander through Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's 14th-century souk. Shop for spices, textiles, lanterns, jewelry, and antiques. Enjoy mint tea & hookah at El Fishawi Café, unchanged for centuries. Haggle respectfully, bargaining is part of the experience. You'll notice mostly males in the cafes smoking hookah, don't be concerned as tourists in the market this is acceptable for both men & women. Although you may get a side eye or two.

💰Navigating Bakshish in Egypt

In Egypt, you'll often encounter bakshish—a form of informal tipping or gratuity. It's woven into daily life and not necessarily a "bribe," but rather a small token of appreciation for services rendered. They'll often rub two fingers together indicating they expect something. Expect to give 5–20 EGP ($0.20–$0.70) to porters, restroom attendants, and even guards who offer directions or open doors at sites. Guides, drivers, and hotel staff typically receive 10–15% tips for good service.

La, shukran – لا شكرا, Pronunciation: la shoo-kraan. This is a polite, firm way to decline offers, tipsy "helpers," or street vendors without sounding rude.

Book GEM and Saqqara tours in advance for skip-the-line access.

Use domestic flights to maximize sightseeing time.

Licensed guides enrich the experience, especially in Luxor.

Safety: Cairo is generally safe for tourists but stay alert in markets and avoid unauthorized camel operators.

Women (and you tank top wearing men!) should dress modestly especially at temples and Valley of the Kings (read sacred grounds). Remember Egypt for all its modernity is still a very conservative country.

Fridays are the most holy day of the week for Muslims and things may be closed during the afternoon hours. Egypt "weekends" are Friday – Saturday.

Egypt is HOT. I was there during September, and it was 95-100F by mid-morning. Stay hydrated folks!!
