3 Days in Luang Prabang: Waterfalls, Elephants & Lotus Pond Luxury

Welcome to Luang Prabang, the chillest little jewel of Laos where temples glitter like your grandma's best earrings, waterfalls look like nature's Instagram filter, and sticky rice is basically a food group. It's got old-world charm, an ethical elephant sanctuary, and enough beer and night market snacks to keep you happily fueled. Plus, the new China-Laos high-speed train means you can get here faster than you can say "Beerlao." But heads up—more tourists mean the famous monk alms ceremony is now a bit of a photo op showdown. Still worth waking up for. 🙏

🐃💦🌸 Day 1 – Dairy Dreams, Waterfall Waves & Lotus Pond Dinners

🍦 Morning: Start with a sweet detour at Laos Buffalo Dairy. Buffalo milk ice cream that's basically magic on a cone. They have more than buffalo here: feed the pigs, rabbits & baby buffalo as a paid add on to the free tour! Laos Buffalo Dairy

🐻💧 Afternoon: Splash into the turquoise pools at Kuang Si Falls and say hi to the rescued bears. You can hike all the way to the top (not for me it's slippery rocks and I'm a clutz) I wouldn't recommend flip flops, but people were doing it. I chose the nice viewpoint from the bridge before you hit the real incline. There's also a café that sells beers, so you don't have to lug them up yourself. There's little fish in pools along the way that will give you a pedicure, sans polish.

🌿🍽️📸 Evening: Feast on a luxe Lao tasting menu at Manda de Laos, soaking up views over your own private lotus pond. Instagram? Yes, please. Reservations Recommended. Go after the sun sets for maximum ambiance! Manda de Laos Instragram

🧘‍♂️🏯🌙 Day 2 – Monks, Temples & Market Munchies

🙇‍♂️📿 Sunrise: Witness the solemn monk alms ceremony. Early wake-up required, but worth it for the vibes (and photos, just don't be that tourist). If you want a guaranteed seat some of the fancy hotels on the route will put out small plastic chairs for guests. Otherwise, you're standing the whole time. Pick a spot near an intersection to see monks from multiple temples. I did two mornings in two different spots. The closer you get to the market area the more likely the bus tourists will be there with zoom lenses in your face or their faces.

🕍✨ Late Morning: Explore stunning temples like Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Visoun. There's basically one "main road" thru town so you can't miss the temples along the road to Wat Xieng Thong complex.

🍷🥗 Lunch: Refuel at Gaspard, the perfect spot for French-Lao fusion and icy cocktails. Do their tasting menu the local mushrooms are insane. Reservations Recommended This place is definitely a treat yourself moment! Gaspard on Instagram

🍺💦 Afternoon: Dive back into your hotel pool with another Beerlao (hydration is key). Or maybe catch a nap after all that tasting menu food!

🎉 🍜Evening: Hit the lively night market for street food dinner that's cheap, cheerful, and totally addictive. I met some cool fellow travelers (all younger than me) and chatted over ice cold beers, they were shocked I was solo traveling "at my age" little do they know I could probably drink them under the table.

🐘🥂🇫🇷 Day 3 – Elephant Encounters & French Farewell

🍃🥗🐘 Morning to Early Afternoon: Spend a mindful half-day at Mandalao Elephant Conservation, feeding and walking with gentle giants—no riding, just respect. Lunch included. This was THE highlight of my trip. You arrive at the center where the conservationist gives an overview of what they're doing to increase their Laotian elephant population then you take a boat across the river to meet your new friends. You first feed them some snacks like bananas so they can get to know you (well your smell) so they become OK with your presence. Then you basically take a walk in the woods with them as the feed more. Look out for the water buffalos in the same area snacking away too! After about 1-1.5 hours you return to camp for a buffet lunch. Great souvenir idea: Elephant poop paper and journals! Mandalao Elephant Conservation

🛍️🏊‍♂️ Afternoon: Last-minute souvenir hunt or a final poolside chill. Or maybe a massage. There's plenty of options!

🚤🌅 Evening: Mekong River Cruises: Chill Vibes & Stunning Views. Mekong sunsets are chef's kiss perfect. Some offer dinner but I chose the free beer & a snack option, saving room for dinner! Departure times depends on the season.

🍽️🍷🎩 Dinner: Say au revoir in style with a refined dinner at L'Elephant, where Lao flavors meet French elegance, because your trip deserves a classy send-off. Complete with Champagne & Wines straight from France. L’Elephant Reservations

🚄🌏 The High-Speed Rail That Changed the Game

Thanks to the new China-Laos Railway, getting to Luang Prabang is now a breeze two hours from Vientiane instead of a half-day bumpy ride. The downside of this rail and its endless parade of Chinese tourists? They roll in by the busload, show up just long enough for the alms ceremony, then blitz through the market like it's a speed run back to their bus. And guess what? Almost all the jobs? Taken by Chinese workers not Lao locals. The rail itself? Yup, totally Chinese-run. So, is it really helping Lao tourism or just turning it into a well-oiled sightseeing assembly line? You decide.

💵✨ Bonus Tips:

☕🍊 Finish up the Alms morning at the bustling morning market, then duck into a café to try the iced coffee with orange juice. Sounds weird, tastes surprisingly good like a caffeinated tropical twist you never knew you needed.

💸 Bring brand-new US dollar bills for tipping and purchases—no tears, no folds, no crumples. The Lao kip is great but often dusty and worn, and locals prefer crisp greenbacks, especially for beers at the Night Market…you'll thank me later! I brought $100 of all one-dollar bills because, yes, it's that cheap here.

🧘Have another Day? – River Retreats, Spa Bliss & Lao BBQ Feast

🚤 Morning: Hop on a traditional longtail boat and cruise the serene Mekong River to the Pak Ou Caves home to thousands of Buddha statues piled high in sacred limestone grottoes. The views? Totally postcard-worthy.

💆‍♀️🌿 Afternoon: Back in town, treat yourself to some serious R&R at one of Luang Prabang's many spas. From herbal steam baths to relaxing massages, it's the perfect way to unwind after days of adventure. Think zen, but with a side of pampering.

🍖🔥 Evening: Cross the river to Dyen Sabai, a local favorite known for its authentic Lao BBQ and chill riverside vibe. Grill your own meats and veggies while soaking up the laid-back atmosphere it's the kind of dinner that feels like a reward.
